English Summary

PCB Development Can Start Before the Specification Is Complete

One of the major causes of delay in PCB and FPGA development is waiting for the specification to be fully completed.

Of course, clear specifications are important. However, especially in prototyping and debugging, it is not always necessary to decide every detail before development begins.

Some items should be defined early because they are difficult to change later, such as:

  • Power supply voltage
  • I/O types
  • Required interfaces
  • PCB size
  • Minimum required functions

On the other hand, detailed behavior and control methods may still be changed later, especially when FPGA logic and software are used.

The important point is to separate the design into two categories:

What must be decided before hardware design starts
and
What can remain flexible after the PCB is manufactured

This approach is particularly effective for prototypes and debugging boards.

In many development projects, the initial objective is already clear enough:

  • Check a signal
  • Connect and evaluate a sensor
  • Test image processing in an FPGA
  • Verify communication with an existing system

In such cases, building a board with only the essential functions and testing it early can be more useful than spending a long time trying to create a perfect specification.

In fact, building real hardware often helps clarify the specification itself.

This also changes the role of the development process. Instead of receiving a completely finished specification and then starting the design, it becomes possible to refine the specification while development is already in progress.

FPGA and software are especially useful for this approach because many functions can still be modified after the hardware is built.

For rapid PCB development, the important question is therefore not simply:

“How quickly can we complete the specification?”

A better question may be:

“How much of the specification must be decided before development can begin?”

Determining that boundary is itself an important part of rapid hardware development.
