English Summary
Where PCB Development Takes Time: Schematic Design and Component Selection
One of the time-consuming parts of PCB development is schematic design. However, in practice, choosing the right components often takes more time than drawing the schematic itself.
For each design, many decisions must be made:
- Which interfaces should be used?
- Which ICs are suitable?
- What power devices are required?
- Which peripheral components are needed?
- Are those components actually available?
After selecting a device, its datasheet must also be checked carefully. Pin functions, power requirements, decoupling capacitors, unused pins, and other details all need to be confirmed before the circuit can be finalized.
Creating schematic symbols and PCB libraries can also require significant time. Reusing proven circuits and existing libraries can shorten this process, although every library should still be verified against the manufacturer’s datasheet.
FPGA Pin Flexibility Can Reduce PCB Routing Time
FPGA devices provide another useful advantage.
Unlike many microcontrollers or dedicated ICs, FPGA general-purpose I/O pins can often be reassigned relatively freely, within constraints such as I/O bank voltage, clock pins, and dedicated functions.
This means that FPGA pin assignments do not always need to be completely fixed during schematic design.
When PCB routing begins, a signal may be moved to another suitable FPGA pin if that makes the physical routing simpler.
For high-pin-count FPGA designs, this flexibility can significantly reduce trace crossings, vias, and routing complexity.
Optimize the Schematic and PCB Layout Together
For rapid development, it can be more effective to optimize the schematic and PCB layout together instead of treating them as completely separate steps.
Rather than perfecting every FPGA pin assignment before layout starts, some flexibility can be intentionally left for the PCB routing stage.
This approach may look unusual, but it can reduce the total development time.
The goal is not simply to finish the schematic as quickly as possible.
The real goal is to minimize the total time required to move from component selection and circuit design to a manufacturable PCB.
